BC Bike Race: the Pacific Traverse - Sooke to Whistler BC - July 1-7 2007
Our very own Rod Dagneau and his team mate Mike Charuk of Team Whistler captured the last 3 stages in a row at the BC Bike Race completed this past weekend. Their success wasn't quite enough to overcome the gap that their category leaders in the 80+ group had established over the first 4 stages, but it was enough to secure a 2nd place overall finish after the completion of the 7 stage event. Congrats Rod!

24 Hours Of Summer Solstice, Albion Hills, Ontario, Canada, June 23-24, 2007
Excert from a Report by : Chris Macfarlane
Klymson take top honours
A dramatic dogfight played out in the Under 40 solo division between several local riders. Tristan Smit from Bikesports marked Hendershot for the first few laps contesting the overall lead, but Hendershot’s pace proved to be too much for Smit who eventually suffered from several issues, and ultimately put him on the sidelines. Cyclissimo’s Ed Veal, a newcomer to the solo scene, waged a see-saw battle with 2005 overall champion Matt Klymson from the Cycle Solutions / Angry Johnny’s Racing squad throughout the night. Klymson maximized his time in the saddle forcing Veal to play catch up repeatedly. Veal played out his role gamely, until an untimely broken chain combined with fading physical resources dropped him from the lead around 8am. The chase was taken up by 2006 world solo championships 8th place finisher Andrew Parry, who had been carefully lying in wait for a final push toward the front. Parry’s late surge gained back a few precious minutes, but Klymson measured out his remaining reserves of energy to hold most of his hard-earned gap intact, taking the Under 40 title and 2nd overall with the same 23 laps as Hendershot to salvage some pride for the locals. Notably, Hendershot’s 23rd lap had been checked in over an hour earlier with the overall win already mathematically assured.

Hardwood Hills Canada Cup XC, Ontario, June 17/2007
Race report by : Matt Klymson
Matt K rippin' er up
During my trip to Toronto, I had 2 races planned. The first race was at a location called Hardwood Hills just North of Barrie, about 1.5 hours drive from where I was staying at my mother's apartment along the Lake Ontario shoreline. This race, which is part of the Canada Cup series, always draws an extremely competitive field totalling about 800 riders between all age and ability categories. The Elite start took on an extra measure of seriousness with entries from several international Olympic teams on the start line including China, Brazil, New Zealand, Chile and many of Canada's top riders in attendance. Most were in final preparation for 2 rounds of mountain biking's World Cup series to be held on the subsequent 2 weekends in Quebec, or else looking for 11th hour UCI points to be able to qualify for same. Yours truly and clubmate Christy Love, who was also in Ontario for this race, looked to have our respective hands full.

Christy racing the Elite event
I went into the event knowing that I had no chance to compete anywhere near the front of the field in the Elite category, especially with many riders treating this as one of their primary events of the year, as opposed to my purpose which was to serve as a final tune up for my 24hr race the following weekend (excuses, excuses...). That would be a longer distance and duration more closely matched to my training. Nevertheless, I did not embarrass myself too badly, finishing in 44th place out of 65 starters in my category in a time of 2 hour 26 minutes, albeit not in any way threatening the winning riders who were well out of my sight quite early in the race. Although I'm used to this phenomena being from Ontario, it's quite amazing how they can take a course with no more than 100' elevation change between highest and lowest points, and yet and make it feel like you're always climbing. Very painful at times. Christy managed to do a little better on the women's side, rolling through for a 27th place finish. We saw each other on the course once, but couldn't find each other after the race. So much for socializing!

Future Heros Crit - Richmond BC - July 8 2007
The usual Thursday crit course saw some racing this past weekend with the CVC / Atomic led event. Flat & fast, and always fun! Ian Fingler was aggressive through the race, but found himself boxed out in the sprint & rolled in for a top 20 spot. Chris Reynolds continues his assult on the Cat 1/2 races, earning his stripes in the competitive group.

Yaletown GP - Vancouver BC - July 1 2007
Crash & tumble - that was the name of the game on this tight crit course - at least for the lesser categories. In the Cat 4 event, racer Derek Sakamoto bombed into some fencing when a rider ahead of him blew a tire & slid into his path. Ian Fingler, not happy with his Cat 4 race decided to go double header with the Masters event as well.

In the Cat1/2 event, racer Chris Reynolds worked hard in the pack, but the peloton was no match for the 1-2 punch of Svein & Andrew.

Warp Speed TT - Abbottsford BC - May 13 2007
A quiet day out by the airport, it looks like most riders stayed home on the weekend of "Mom" instead of pitting themselves against the race against the clock. The Warp Speed TT provided a nice flat race course paralleling the border. Light cross-winds from the south were only a minor hinderance with top times in the 1/2 Cats coming in at just over 25min over the 20(ish)km route. Club racer Derek Sakamoto rolling in for a 10th spot in the 4's.

Vancouver International Half Marathon - Vancouver BC - May 6 2007
Missed a race last weekend. If you were in the west end on May 6th, you may have noticed the closed roads and dazed runners slogging along. Club member Imelda Wong was in the mix racing the half marathon.

The Love Report - Elite racer Christy sends us updates on her travels and triumphs
Joshua Trees and Rice Pudding Race Update

Hi All,

Well, believe it or not, I survived my first few days back at work after 2 weeks in California. Still feeling a little dizzy here and there from the rice pudding...ok back up a few steps...

Desert folliage?
After my first weekend of races in California, we drove to Joshua Tree National Park for some camping amongst some of the most unique ecology I have ever seen (see pictures attached) - especially odd for a BC girl used to camping among the evergreens and rushing glacial streams...

The night before we left for the second race weekend in Fontana (outside LA), we polished off the last of the Kozy Shack rice pudding. Sure it smelled a little odd when we pulled it out of the cooler, but nothing our iron clad stomachs couldn't handle, right? And it still tasted mighty fine...well, my intrepid travel partner James was up all night puking while I - so far untouched - pondered what desert illness he may have contracted and how I might drag his limp body to emergency medical attention should it be something serious. He assured me it was a classic case of food poisoning, which I was able to confirm when I succumbed in my own way the next day. The drive to LA passed in a haze of nausea and pounding headaches...as did much of the next two days. I easily made the executive decision not to race when I couldn't fathom driving in a car, making pre-race preparations, eating breakfast, warming up, or even getting out of bed...

Rice Pudding disaster zone
I did revive in time for the short track on Sunday, although I seemed to be wanting for a little saliva. Right off the gun, my mouth was completely sucked dry. Have you ever eaten an unripe persimmon? Same effect...I was likely still a little drained from the previous days' events and got pulled halfway through (they pull you if you're out of contention)...

So at the end of it all, after 3500 miles - MILES! - of driving, 3 races, and less rest than I had hoped for, I find myself sitting 44th of 70 in the NORBA US National short track series (having completed 2/3 races to date) and 69 of 79 in the cross country (1/3 races completed). Lots of room for improvement and lots of racing to come!

Thanks for reading. I hope to catch up with each of you very soon!
Christy

Washington Senior State Road Championship - Longbrach WA; May 6 2007
Cat 3 speedster Chris Reynolds took his racing south for a great 20th place spot. No doubt Chris was working hard at the front. His race report is below.

Tales from the Trenches
Speedy Chris Reynolds provides another quick story about his road racing
On Sunday May 6th I raced the Washington Senior State Road Championships in Longbrach Washington which is close to Tacoma. I placed 20th in about a 80 person Cat 3 field (the Cat 3 fields are really big in Washington). There was an 11 person break infront of me (which I tried my best to bridge to) and I was severely boxed in, in the pack sprint.. but I really enjoyed it. It was a novel experience racing in the States with a lot of guys with totally different uniforms to here. The Americans also race a little different.. mainly less aggressive.. then here, which was cool to watch.

Happy Riding,

Chris

Team riders were out at the FloraGlo BC Cup Race #2 in Maple Ridge, and oh what a day. In the Cat3 event, young Chris Reynolds made his debut in his upgraded category with an 8th place finish. In Cat4, Mike Tunnah was near the front of the pack, hitting well with a top 20 finish. Riders Derek Sakamoto and Frank Weber lagged behind with some stragglers. New papa Sven Sturm was also out there challenging the Cat 1/2 race.

Tales from the Trenches
Racer Christy Love sends us her usual entertaining stories of her racing exploits with the pro women tour!
Keeping cool on a hot day
Hi Everyone,

A quick missive from Santa Barbara, with two races down and two to go. The most remarkable thing about this trip has been - you guessed it - the weather! After a long two days in the car, it is suddenly summer and I have unleashed my pastey white legs for the first time this year.

My first two races - the NORBA #2 short track and cross country - were in Santa Ynez County, a pastoral region dotted with fields of grape trees. I'll sample at least one of the race sponsor's wines sometime this week, now that the racing is over for a few days!

The racing was hot and dusty, while my lungs and legs were slow to get rolling. My climbing legs are still a bit sluggish, but all in all things are coming around. The lethargy from several big weeks of training is fading away and I hope to be flying by next weekend's races in Fontana, on the smoggy outskirst of LA.

CLove - faster than a speeding bullet
Well, some of you have work to do, so I'll keep my message short, and say the rest with a few images for your viewing pleasure.

I hope you're all doing well, keeping busy and behaving yourselves. We are off to Joshua Tree National Park for a few days of camping and relaxing before NORBA #3 next weekend.

See you soon,
Christy

Club News - April 27 2007

New club name decided - it's "West Coast Racing"
It was always going to be a tough task to come up with a single name to meet a diverse set of requirements, but through a lengthy democratic process and much informal consultation with members, the club will be renamed "West Coast Racing" or "WCR" for short. The West Coast portion has been generously donated by the incoming West Coast Mountain Bike Club members who get to retain this legacy of their identity as a club, while the Racing portion reflects our desire to engage in ongoing learning to develop better skills and improved fitness - not necessarily how many formal race events we choose to participate in. The process to publicly announce and rebrand our club name across all our various materials will be an ongoing task during the next few months.

Chris Reynolds tackles the Spring Series Armstrong Hill
My first race of the season was last Sunday - Armstrong in the B's - here's a recap...

In the first 2 laps of the race I realized that with my terrible mechanical skills I had adjusted my front derailleur the previous day such that I did not have access to my big ring. I decided on the third lap to quit trying to access it as I was riding very shaky trying forcefully to shift up with two hands and stuff.

This meant that on the flat sections I was spinning way too fast for the rest of the race and on the downhill section I had to use a deep aerotuck to keep up..

From there on the race basically worked out how most climbers races work out. After each time up the hill more and more riders fell off until the eighth lap where only 6 remained. At the crest of the hill with exactly one full lap to go Jonathan Page attacked.. I knew he was very strong and I knew I couldn't stay with him in 39 12 gearing. So I stayed with the other four. I really wanted to beat one rider so that I could see my name on Monday. The five of us stayed together almost until the finish line on the hill when a the young racer from Total Restoration initiated the sprint. I gave it my all, my legs burned and so did my breath and I place second behind Jonathan Page (who is a really nice guy by the way)....

Happy Spring Riding,
Chris

And finally.. Sven and Amanda have a girl!
After an extra 8 days of waiting around Amanda (a.k.a. Mrs Maple) delivered our first daughter. She gave birth on February 01, 2007 at 23:18 to a beauty of 3,415 gram (~ 7 lbs 6 oz) weight and 51.5 cm (~ 20 1/4 in) length.

Baby and mother are doing great despite a dramatic birth, thanks to some chemical enhancements; while the father is his usual self. The little one is sleeping like a charm and feeding already.

Don't ask me for the name yet ... still in negotiations.
Sven.

Sven is back off to the hospital. Hopefully, we'll have some photos to share!

just another day in paradise
Cariboo: Awesome weather: average temp -5 and sunny many days but we have had -32 for a few days.

The small school for the kids (38 kids from K to grade 7) is wonderful. They love it.

We have tons of wildlife on the property: up close we have seen wolves; coyotes, fox, deer, moose. We have two families of muskrats in the ponds. Up until the ponds froze over we had dozens of different migratory birds. We have eagles and hawks on the property as well.

I don't get to ride outdoors this time of year (obviously) but I am signed up to ride the Trans Rockies again. Not sure how I will train but when Spring arrives I have 100's of KM of local ski trails as well as terrific road riding here. I am looking forward to exploring the back country by bike in spring and summer.

forget that tabletop jump... this is a whole new way to get some air
Nicoletta Lepri, Touring Down Under...
For much of 2006, Nicoletta was AWOL... as she decided to book off work and head south for a few months. Nicoletta gives us a quick update on her adventures:

Hello all!! I've spent the last five months 'down unda!' having lots of adventures - none cycling related, except for driving by the host mountain for the 2006 World Mountain Biking Championships in New Zealand. I've gone snorkling, black water rafting (tubing), climbed a bridge, walked a 14 km City2Surf Fun Run, and my personal favourite: skydived!! Looking forward to getting back on my bike and riding the mountains!!

I start work on monday--hopefully i'll remember how to do everything!!
thanks for your interest in my adventures!! looking forward to the workouts!!

Nicoletta

Other interesting tid bits...
If you haven't been aware... Amanda and Sven are soon to be proud parents.

And... Long time Krebs members Matt D and Alyssa are getting married this Spring!
