Ironman Canada Race Report
Despite smokey weather from the BC fires, four Krebs riders (and almost 2000 other athletes)
braved this year's Ironman race. 2.4mi swim, 112mi bike, 26.2mi run. Check out their results in
the archived August news section.
Krebs very own pro-triathlete Tracy Hall shares her experiences and memories.
Hello all,
Well it's race report time again. I figure I've had enough time to
ponder, so it's time to tell all.
Until race morning, I didn't quite believe that the race would go off,
but the morning turned out to be cool and clear. The last minute
checks of the transition bags, putting food on the bike, and blowing
up of the tires being done I put on my wetsuit with Paul's help. We
talked about our swim strategy and I decided that if the pros were
lined up on the far left of the start I would start with them; otherwise
I'd line up with the lead age groupers. I did not want to start out by
getting swamped by the fast age group men. As it turned out, the
pros were right in the middle, so I went with option 2. I really think
this was a wise move from the stories I heard after the race. I had
relatively few entanglements, but still got a nice draft, then on the
second loop I moved closer to the buoys and continued to move
through the pack.
The swim complete - onto the bike!
 |
I felt well ahead of schedule with a 1:04 clocking, that's 2 minutes
faster than my last Ironman swim. I whizzed through transition and
hopped on to my bike. Just when I was starting to get irritated with
being unable to get my shoe in the pedal I heard an extremely loud
bang. I was afraid to look down because I knew that it was my tube
that had exploded. Did I over-inflate?
Have you ever attempted to change a tire in front of a crowd of
hundreds? I got so many offers for help, which of course, I had to
keep refusing as athletes can be disqualified for taking aid from
non-volunteers. With everyone gawking I started in on fixing the flat,
but I really struggled with getting my brand new tight tire off my Zipp
rim. Since it had taken two of us to even get them on I was well
aware that I could be there a while, so I decided perhaps my best
move was to run the bike back to transition; it wasn't that far away.
However, my "tire angel" arrived in the nick of time. I was
extraordinarily grateful to have him take over. He later told me it was
the slowest tire he's ever changed. After 15 minutes or so I was
roadworthy again, but it took me another minute at least to get back
on the road as I was now on the opposite side of the crowd; it
seemed to take forever for them to clear a space wide enough for
me to fit through.
It felt great to be out riding again. My friend Mike who witnessed the
flat reassured me that that was my bad luck for the day and now I
should focus on the race. The cyclists around me were considerably
slower than I was, so I kept yelling "on your left" and blew by them. I
kept telling myself not to ride too hard to make up ground because I
may regret it in a few hours. Ride hard, but stay within yourself I
thought. After an hour or so I came across some faster cyclists and
began to feel more like I was in the right spot. Unfortunately, this
feeling was shortlived as my front tire got a slow leak. I said my
good byes to the faster folks and pulled over once again. At least
now I could take a pee, right?
All smiles climbing to Yellow Lake; 140k done, 40 to go! (then run...)
 |
Before I could start in with the tire levers, the Bike Barn van pulled
up. Oh yes! They told me to relax, have some food, drink some
gatorade and they would do everything. Once again there was some
swearing at the Zipp wheel and one of the guys said I could wait ten
minutes for my own wheel to get fixed, or just take one of theirs. I
went for the 2nd option and was off again. By the out and back I
was riding with the same faster riders again and eventually dropped
them on the way to Yellow Lake. I felt stronger than I ever have on
the Yellow Lake climb and continued into town without incident. My
bike time was 5:49, pretty much the same time I did in 99, but with 2
flats. I probably would have ridden around 5:30 without the flats
which I would have been thrilled with.
Finishing the bike I felt good, fairly fresh, but it was tough to keep
my head in the game because I knew I wasn't where I
could've/should've been and it got to me seeing how much further
ahead the other pro women were. I knew I was running well; people
told me I looked good and I thought I did too next to some of the
folks I was passing, but on the inside I was struggling. It wasn't the
race I wanted and had trained for, but here I was. On the third loop,
after a pitstop at Tim Horton's bathroom, where everyone wished
me a good race, I regrouped and became determined to finish the
race strong. No more stopping at aid stations, just run to the finish.
The finishing kick
 |
Since the flats, I hadn't really been keeping track of my time, so
when I was within sight of the finish line I was shocked to see 10:28
on the clock. I realized I could still go under 10:30 despite the flats
and I was amazed. Before the race I told people I wanted to go
under 10:30, and hoped to be somewhere between 10 and 10:30
depending on the day. Well, that was the day, and I was 10:29.
Thanks to all of you for helping me get there. Next time I plan to
subtract 20 minutes + a few extra for added fitness. That will be
Coeur d"Alene 2004! In the meantime, Paul and I are running and
planning to do Sacramento in December. Until next time,
tracy
