Racing Debrief (World Cup, Natioanls, Whistler Canada Cup)
Hi everyone,
Yes, I'm terribly behind in my updates. Something to do with working and training and traveling and racing just caught up with me all of a sudden. So to get everyone up to speed and relieve my guilt, I will summarize each of the past 3 big races in just 2 grammatically correct sentences each!
The World Cup, Mt. St. Anne, June 25
EVERYONE from around the world who hopes to be in Beijing in 2008 was at Mt. St. Anne for the World Cup; even the Chinese women in their funky white (gardening?) gloves, who have never before been competitive in international XC racing showed up and placed 3 women in the top 20! I got called up to the line as #75 out of about 80 starters, rode as hard as I could, and had worked my way up to 64th before I got the ol' hook for soon-to-be-lapped racers - dang, but the crowds sure were cool!
The Canadian National MTB Championship, Sunpeaks, July 15
Roughing it at Chateau Parking Lot/Wind Tunnel, I braved wind burn, sunburn and holey air mattresses to give it my all on the tough Nationals course. With steep ups and steep downs, lots of dust and general suffering, I started well but faded to 28th of 40 starters - not as good as I'd hoped, but I was happy to have stayed upright and kept up the fight.
Canada Cup #4: Whistler, July 22
Dang was it hot... temperatures in their high 30s took their toll on racers not used to feeling like crap when they are racing (unlike me!). I rode a steady pace, had a great time on the technical climbs and flowy wood structures and picked off wilting racers throughout the race, finishing up in 21st against a 44-strong field that included all the top racers from the Nationals, plus a few guest stars from the US. After I stopped, I dunked my head in the sprinkler and drank about 3 litres of water, had a popsicle, some chocolate milk, some iced tea, some more water, all the while letting out great sighs of exhaustion - yeah, that WAS hot!
I've got the last Canada Cup race this weekend in Mount Washington, then the BC Champs at Bear Mountain in Mission and that's a wrap for the MTB season. Then I can fiddle around with some time trialing and cyclocross as the mood strikes!
Thanks to all of you for your friendship, support and encouragement! See you soon,
Christy

What a week for road racing. BC's Super Week was a rollicking ride, with Tours of White Rock, Gastown and Delta, not to mention the appetizer with the Giro de Burnaby.
Tour de Gastown - Vancouver BC, July 16/2006
The return of the Gastown crit continues to bring a spark to Vancouver's race scene with its fast paced action. The women led the evening off with a grand event with Burnaby racer Gina Grain taking top honours (again). The men's race brough some excitement with Navigator's Hilton Clarke, Symmetrics' Brad Fairall, and Health Net's Kirk O'Bee (of N.Van) roared off the front to ultimately catch the pack. This led to a group sprint for 4th & 5th (nabbed by Andrew Pinfold and Gord Fraser), and a final set of laps by the lead three for a 3-up sprint. Navigators took top honours with a convincing lead, with Symmetrics nabbing a close 2nd from Health Net.
Krebs racers were cheering on their fellow club mates Sven Sturm, who finished 89th in the men's race, and XC specialist Christy Love represented her team well, ultimately pulling out of the fast paced crit.
Tour de Delta - Delta BC, July 21,22,23/2006
Scorching hot weather greeted racers at the popular Delta event, comprising of the:
Stage 1: Brenco Hill Climb, July 21; a 700m "sprint" up a 9% slope
Stage 2: Lehigh Cement Crit, July 22; a flat, fast loop through Ladner
Stage 3: White Spot RR, July 23; an epic point to point ending with a rolling loop in Tsawassen
Krebs member and Red Truck strong-man Sven Sturm charged up the Delta escarpment to 70th, rode to 67th in the Crit, and 54th in the RR. This put him 41st in the Tour de Delta Omnimium. Nice job!

Canadian Cup XC #4, Lost Lake - Whistler BC, July 23/2006
The Canadan Cup tour hit Whistler this weekend for another epic XC event. This event put riders on the rolling trails of the Lost Lake park. And oh, what a hot dry weekend it was on the trails.
As a nice diversion to the heat, the XC event kicks off the start of a full week Mountain Bike festival at Whistler.
Krebs sends its congrats to:
Christy Love for a Women's Elite 21st
Heather King for a Women's Elite 33rd
Matt Drown for a Masters Expert Men 6th
Gear Jammer - Squamish BC, July 23rd
Krebs racer Kevin Thorpe had another successful ride flying the bright orange colors. He placed 6th at the Gear Jammer with a time of 3:44.00 racing in the under 20 catagory. Next week he is off to Kamloops to represent zone 5 in the B.C. Games
Also representing Krebs in this epic point to point from Alice Lake to downtown Squish via some tasty singletrack was Mike Tunnah. Mike was chewing up the course on his swank Scott Genius, egging out a 19th placing in his category.
Other Foolish Endeavours
Aldergrove Credit Union Triathlon - Abbotsford BC, July 23/2006
One word to describe the day. HOT. Record temperatures nearing 35deg were seen as the racers slogged through the 10k around the poorly shaded Albert Dyke Park. The balmy weather drew water levels down in the lake, and led to a non-wetsuit swim due to warm water temperatures; and light breezes provided little comfort on the bike loop around the Abbotsford airport. It seems a few speedy BC & National team members were warming up for the coming BC Games at this local event, which led to some ultra-competative racing in the under 30 age categories.
Keeping away from this youthful melée, Krebs racer Derek Sakamoto managed to cherry pick his event well, finding himself a 2nd place spot in category, finishing 16th overall.

Super Week continued with the Tour de White Rock. Krebs member Sven Sturm was heating it up with the grueling, hilly Road Race. Congrats on a 48th placing on that tough course!

BC Provincial Crits: Lonsdale Classic - North Vancouver BC, July 9/2006
The ever challenging Lonsdale Crit course played host to the BC Provincial Champs this year. Racers were greeted with that lovely slog up Lonsdale. Short, but steep!
Krebs member Kevin Thorpe raced to 1st place in the U15 category. Nicely done.
Krebs racer Ian Fingler pushed in for 6th in the Men's Cat 4.
Other Foolish Endeavours
Canada Day Swim - Belcarra Park, Port Moody BC, July 1/2006
A late notice... racer Barb Bain challenged herself with the 2k swim at the annual Canada Day swim-fest at Belcarra Park. This event hosts a 1k, 2k, and 4k event. Barb raced to a 8th place in her category.
Desert Half Iron - Osoyoos BC, July 9/2006
As if a half iron triathlon wasn't challenging enough. This course puts the out/back bike on the hilly Hwy #3 (over the 1000ft Richter Pass climb). Not once, but twice over Richter.... AND add the 30+ degree heat we had. Now that's a tough day at the office.
Krebbie Anthony Tomic was up to the challenge though. Well done at 11th in category.
Squamish Triathlon - Squamish BC, July 9/2006
The popular Squish Tri saw some changes this year with a move to a 4-lap bike / 2-lap run ITU race style format. More turns, more ups & downs, LESS DRAFTING! Krebite Derek Sakamoto faced the challenge with a 6th in category (29th overall) placing.
Former Krebs rider (recently married and dropped of the face of the earth) Mike McArthur came in on Derek's heels in 7th (in category). Hopefully Mike and wife Emma will join us soon in the orange and blue.

What a weekend for road racing! A one-two punch with the Yaletown Grand Prix on Canada Day, and the Cypress Mtn hill climb on Sunday. Not to mention the Canadian Road Nationals being held in Québec this weekend (but alas, not Krebbies there...)
Yaletown Grand Prix, July 1/2006
Canada Day was celebrated by racers with the 3rd running of the Yaletown Grand Prix Criterium. The fast & furious 6-turn course was full of surprises. Crashes, breakaways, and a strung out peloton were part of the game.
In the Cat 3/4 race, Krebs rider Matt Drown lasted the longest of the Krebs racers until a slider took him out of the race. Matt was working hard in a small group trying to reel in the solo breakaway leader (and ultimate winner). Yup. Some guy in a non-orange & blue jersey not worth mentioning... Meanwhile, in the caboose, Ian Fingler and Derek Sakamoto suffered for their poor positioning, and were pulled from the race just before being lapped.
Cypress Hill Climb, July 2/2006
As if a the Crit wasn't enough, Krebbies were at it again at scaling Cypress Mtn. Ugh...

Great White North Half Iron - Stony Plain AB, July 2 2006
Krebs racer Imelda Wong made a solo trek out to Edmonton to race in the popular Great White North Half Iron. Despite battling a sinus infection and healing up from a fractured tibia, Imelda placed 3rd in the 30-34 age group to qualify for an IMC spot (which she regretfully declined). Racing with the Big Girls.
Hi Fan Club! (well, I figure at least one of you must be a fan. Mom? Dad?)
Well, I'm at Mt. St. Anne, Quebec, lounging about and resting before I build up for the big World Cup race on Sunday. Just as well, given the flash summer storm during which our building was struck by lightening! The lights in the suite sparked and there was a loud crash...happily I was not out on my bike at the time.
I am also recovering from yesterday's drive from Vermont via Montreal. I had to change cars in Montreal, so I figured while we (my travel partner Jean Ann and I) were there, we might as well get us some Montreal smoked meat and cure my hankering for red meat! We spent an hour in rush hour traffic inching our way from the Airport to Schwartz's for a famous sandwich and a brief respite before the 3-hour drive to Mt. St. Anne. So we finally get there, low blood sugar, glazed eyeballs...and the place is wall-to-wall people. What the...? A guy with a tray of sandwiches passes by so we swallow a few delicious bites as we piece together the scene. Sure enough, that day, a Monday in the middle of June, from 5-7pm, was the book launch for the History of Schwartz's! There would be no table service, no sandwiches bigger than the ones on the sample tray...oh the sadness...Miraculously we survived by locating some equally delicious but less famous sustenance...
Last weekend, I raced at a NORBA (US series) in Vermont. The fields at NORBAs are typically larger and deeper, so it served as a good warmup for the World Cup. They are also bigger events, with all the US teams present, a number of different events and a more festival-like atmosphere than your typical Canadian race (read = more money!).
I competed in the usual cross country on Saturday. A rooty, rocky technical affair, the course was a lot of work, but I also had a lot of fun as the spectators cheered me down the most technical sections. I finished up in 36th out of 60-something starters.
Sunday was the short track and WOW was it hot! Well into the 30s. Combine the heat with the residual dehydration from Saturday`s race, and my legs were not feeling too keen during my warm-up! In a short track, the whole group of you race off at once around a very short, minimally technical loop that is lined with cheering spectators. With each lap less than 3 minutes, you pin it as hard as you can for about 20 minutes and see where that gets you! I really enjoy this event, as it hurts like a mo'fo but then it's over before you know it. I was the second to last person to get called up (this happens when this is your only race in the series), so had to fight my way up from the back. I did pretty well at it too, finishing up in 24th spot!
Here's hoping the flash summer storms lighten up over the next few days as we start to train on course and get ready to race against the best in the world!
See most of you next week; the rest, hopefully soon!
love
Christy

The tight turns, narrow paths and glorious scenery made for another spectacular race. This Crit was part of the Stanley Park Bikefest, which celebrated the wonderful world of cycling with community events including a bike safety rodeo, Commuter Challenge & Kids races. Along with the Brockton Crit!
Krebbies Derek Sakamoto and Ian Fingler toed the novice men's event. Crit specialist Ian fell victim to a minor crash which put him off the back of the pack with under 5min remaining. Derek pushed on to finish with the pack.

In the 80k Cat 4/5 event, Mike Tunnah solderied to a top 50 spot, while Derek Sakamoto puttered in with the caboose.
Cat 3 racer Matt Drown played role of cannon fodder being lumped in with the Cat 1/2 for their 140km jaunt out to Port Renfrew (and back). Despite discovering a
broken spoke at the start, Matt rolled on. The Krebs club racer of the day was Red Truck Ale / Trek rider Sven Sturm who pushed hard for a 15th slot in the ever

Tales from the Trenches: the Love Report
Krebs member Christy Love (now racing for Giant) sends us an update on her Canada Cup tour
I've finally scrounged up a spot of internet access to send you an update, courtesy of my aunt's downtown Ottawa office...
Today was the first gloriously sunny day in what feels like years. I left the 2 days of warm sunshine I enjoyed in Vancouver before landing in Toronto to pouring rain (yes, I KNOW it's 30 degrees in Vancouver, again). Jump ahead several days, change the location to Bromont Quebec, the site of Canada Cup #1, and it was still pouring rain. Unbelievable! Surely it couldn't rain any longer or any harder! And then it would...You know, it's one thing to ride in the rain all winter, but I tend to hit a limit, sometime around when most cities and countries start to enjoy the sunnier days and warmer temperatures that typify spring and I start to lose it...But there I was, still pulling on my winter riding gear and pedaling around in the rain. At least I had winter riding gear! Some of my fellow racers packed a touch too optimistically, as it turned out, shivering in sweatshirts and shorts.
The course was extremley muddy, but most of the climbs were on fire roads and as long as you have gravity on your side, muddy trails are rideable! The creek crossing, on the other hand...
35 Elite women lined up for the 12:30 start. I was excited! Apart from having to hose down my bike, get undressed in the shower and run a load of laundry after every ride, I really liked this course. My race plan was to take the climbs at my own pace and ride smooth and fast on the muddy descents. These things I did. Unfortunately, the "ride the climbs at my own pace" bit put me pretty far behind the leaders. I ended up 17th on the day- a respectable finish, but one I plan to improve on at next weekend's Canada Cup at Mont Tremblant. My brake pads were completely worn through (as were everyone else's and there were no replacements to be found anywhere closer than Montreal). I had to take my tires off and pour the water out of my rims, and my poor shoes are STILL damp 4 days later.
I dropped some friends off at Tremblant before heading to Ottawa to spend a couple of days with my aunt. I heard the weather is nice at Tremblant (for the moment), but the course has been closed to let it dry out. I am hoping for the best, but expecting peanut butter (for those of you who like eating peanut butter, imagine riding a bike through a big pile of it!).
Today I rode in Gatineau Park, which goes on forever and has some fun, easy trails tucked away from the bustle of the city. But if you find yourself there and need to stop to check you map, limit yourself to 5 seconds or less! Now that the temperatures are finally rising again, the bugs are exploding out of their swampy hiding spots, hungry for human flesh...
Anyway, I hope you are all doing well. I will be back in Vancouver next Monday with news of Canada Cup #2 to follow shortly!
Bye for now,
Christy

Rat Race, Roberts Creek May 6/2006
The Rat Race crew once again put on an excellent race this year, assisted in no small part by a healthy couple of hours of rain that ended shortly before the start and left the course fairly tacky and dust free on most of the downhills. Two new sections of slow-rolling singletrack were added to the course this year, sapping energy from the 300 tired participants, but Krebs riders are made out of tough stuff and managed to rack up an impressive list of results nonetheless including 4 podium finishes! Our club had an excellent turnout at this event, with many racing in the fabled Krebs orange plus some others who don the garb of other teams for race day:
Sven Sturm 2:38:49 (6 of 16, men’s Elite) : Big Sven flexes his muscles yet again
Matt Klymson 3:01:09 (2 of 36, men’s 35-39) : it’s a miracle
Glenn Thompson 3:18??? (listed as DNS in the results, but I watched him come in around that time)
Kevin Thorpe 3:24:35 (6 of 19, men’s under 20) : wicked finish for 15 year old K.T, racing with much older and more experienced riders
Amanda Butler 3:31:53 (4 of 8, women’s Elite) : Amanda’s the safest bet around for a consistent high finish
Heather King 3:35:19 (5 of 8, women’s Elite) : climbing back toward the top of the ladder
Mike Tunnah 3:40:04 (11 of 30, men’s 30-34) : strong start dashed by flats and dubious knowledge of CO2 inflator systems
Glenn Dorey 3:41:49 (20 of 43, men’s 40-44) : way to tough it out through a difficult day
Christy Love 3:45:12 (3 of 7, women’s 30-34) : congrats on podium spot for C-Lo riding for Team Sugoi/Giant
Robyn Pickering 4:11:08 (1 of 4, women’s 45-49) : positively ageless!
Alyssa Myshok 4:28:10 (2 of 7, women’s 40-44) : positively ageless #2, and now 2 podiums in 2 events this year
Ed Beange 4:49:05 (17 of 19, men’s 50-59) : Definitely the performance of the day - tough event to pick for your first ever mountain bike race Ed!
Matt Drown - would have made the podium for sure if not for double flatting, and then ripping a cleat out from the bottom of his shoe

Vancouver Sun Run - Vancouver BC, April 23 2006
Some Krebs members braved the masses and joined 50,000 other runners in this grand running event. We await pictures of
Dug Andrusiek who ran the event in a gorilla suit. Imelda Wong, Barbara Murphy and Derek Sakamoto
also laced up the shoes for the run but in more practical racing togs.

Sea Otter Classic XC - April 2006
Kreb's favourite Sugoi / Giant racer Christy Love was strutting her stuff down in California for the Sea Otter Classic this past weekend. Racing with the pro women, Christy
raced to a spectacular 29th place. Fellow Canadian Kiara Bisaro (Gearsracing.com) and BC rider Wendy Simms (Velo Bella - Kona) notched themselves in at 3rd and 4th respectively.
Junkyard Dog XC - April 1 2006
Despite the heavy rains, Krebs racers rolled out to South Surrey to race in the muddy Junkyard Dog. Congrats to the April fools in their mucky endeavour. Matt Drown plowed through with
bent rear disc rotor... to quote Matt, "It felt like I was riding through sand..." were his comments on this mechanical. Christy Love warmed up with the JYD in prep for her assult on Sea
Otter (above) in the women's Elite Pro race; and Andrea Taylor made her Krebs racing debut in the Sport category. Clean that grit out!
Pavé Update
Devo Spring Classic Stage Race - April 1/2 2006
More April foolishness... Mike Tunnah and Derek Sakamoto rolled out to Langley for the Devo Spring Classic Stage Race. The first stage saw racers on a 8k rolling circuit in the
falling April rain. 100k for the B group, 70k for the C group. Water and grit for all. Mike continued to work hard in the pack as he did all series.... we may have a roadie convert yet. Derek
managed to squeak in for a 10th place spot in the RR. Day two... and blessed with sunny skies. This day's festivities were attended by Krebs racers Derek and Imelda Wong. The Crit
was an adventure, and the 11k TT was painful... but saddly, no point spots for Krebs riders.
Congrats to all Krebs riders who participated in the various Spring Series races during March. Some were lucky enough to see Christy Love rolling out her swanky new Giant TCR... Telecom pink
with matching tires!

Sven hops on a Trek
More exciting news from the Krebs roster. Racer Sven Sturm has signed on with the Trek Red Truck Beer Racing Team for the 2006 year.
The popular Krebs rider will continue his onslaught on the road and XC scene. Perhaps another repeat like his spectacular double header weekend of racing the Test
and West Side Classic with spectacular results.
We all know who's bringin' the beer to the next Krebs function.....

Simard Update - Overseas again.
Our favourite Krebs roadie Dave Simard... went to Europe to race in France, came back to Canada for a spell, where's he at now you ask? Jet set, he's gone west this time. In his own words (in a message from November):
A while ago, I was going to announce that I was moving back to Vancouver. Today, things have changed. I quit my job in Montreal last month (finishing Nov. 30) and have not found any job in Vancouver.
This got me really mad (the vein on my forehead was bubbling). So I decided to fly over Vancouver. I am leaving for Taiwan where I hope to land an English teaching job! So 13 months after leaving for France, I am now trying my chances in Taiwan.
Some people could say that I have lost control and that I am acting in sheer desperation. No, no, I'm just learning and having fun! On the other hand, this move will probably kill any illusion of a return to race cycling.
Oh well, its going to be a different kind of adventure.

Christy Love - XC Giant!
Great news from elite rider Christy Love. After years of racing in the Krebs orange & blue, she's earned a well deserved spot racing with Sugoi and Giant!
Pleased to be part of a home grown grass roots team, we can expect to see Christy tearing up the Canada Cup circuit this year in her swanky new team gear.
This crusty Krebs penner may be able to restrain from a "Booo-goi" call for this special Krebs racer.
Wedding Bells! Congratulations Peg!
Founding Krebs member and former club coach Peg is hitched!
Recently moving to Vancouver Island, Peg found the perfect companion on Dennis Labiuk. They were married on January 15 2006 in the church Peg gew up in - in Orange CT - while visiting her Mom.
The newly weds then travelled to Florida to visit her father, and finished with a honeymoon in Hawaii. Now back home in Victoria, Peg is looking for a new job.
Whew! What a busy couple!
Peg and Dennis are also both getting back into some competitive racing. They're all geared up for the velodrome in Victoria.
All our best to the new couple! Krebs is pleased to introduce to the club:
Dennis and Peg Labiuk!
Club Elections!
Krebs' AGM was held on January 19th. Among the usual club brew-ha-ha, elections for club executive positions were held. Welcome your 2006 club exec:

Other Foolish Endeavours
1st Half - Vancouver, February 19 2006
The popular Vancouver 1st Half (marathon) was run on a chilly but sunny Sunday morning. The scenic route starts racers at the Yaletown roundhouse, circles through Stanley Park, and back to Yaletown. Congrats to Barbra Bain for trudging through this early season race!
